Annabelle the Doll

If we thought 2020 could not get worse, we need to think again, this time we have demonic dolls coming into the mix.

Rewind to 14th August, month six of lockdown and I get a notification on twitter that Annabelle has escaped the Warren Museum. The rumors swirled after fans noticed that someone had edited Annabelle’s wikipedia page saying that Annabelle had "escaped on Aug. 14 at 3 a.m."

For those who do not know, Annabelle is a doll that is reportedly possessed by a young girl of the same name. A nursuing student, who was gifted the doll in 1970, tried to take care of the doll with her roomate, but in turn, was greeted with spiteful and vengeful acts towards them both.

She inspired the Blumhouse produced films: The Conjuring and Annabelle.

Whilst the doll in the film looks more sinister in the film; the movie prop used to invoke fear at its dainty, china-doll like structure and dark foreboding eyes.

In actuality; the doll looks innocent, something you would see on the shelf of a popular shop, something a child would point out. But this makes her more sinister; something stereotypically sweet and childlike is used to be a monster. She is Freud’s wet dream!

So hearing that it may have escaped from the Warren’s museum is a terrifying thought, knowing that she is free and not under the protection of holy water and of someone who understands her and her purposes and could be in anyone’s hands…

It’s a good thing that it’s not true then!

The truth is, Annabelle has not gone missing or escaped from the museum, she hasn’t been in the museum for a while.

The possessed doll came into the Warrens' possession in 1970. They incarcerated it in a special glass box at their home, which later became The Warrens' Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut.

Lorraine and Ed Warren, the infamous paranormal investigators; passed in 2019, and their museum closed in 2019 due to zoning laws, and since then their son in law; Tony Spera has had possession of the artefacts, including Annabelle.

Spera posted an update after hearing the rumors.

“I’m here to tell you something, I don’t know if you want to hear this or not, but Annabelle did not escape,” he shared in a video update. “Annabelle’s alive — well, I shouldn’t say alive — Annabelle’s here, in all her infamous glory. She never left the museum.”

Tony also poked fun at the rumors:

“Annabelle’s here. She didn’t go anywhere. She didn’t take a trip. She didn’t fly first class and she didn’t go out to visit her boyfriend,” he added. "So here she is. Let’s put the rumors to rest, guys. I appreciate all the concern. I’d be concerned if Annabelle really did leave because she’s nothing to play with.”

Whilst Annabelle has been thankfully stationary, her movie counterpart has recently been up to no good which No Line Cinema posting an update of her time during quarentine, check it out here.
